Unitas Youth Zone was named Charity of the Year at The Barnet Group Community Awards 2024
We believe great youth work starts with well supported staff, so we offer benefits that reflect that
What is a sessional?
- Sessional staff are workers paid by the hour, rather than on a salaried or fixed-contract basis
- These roles are part-time and often involve working shifts — especially evenings and weekends, when most youth-work sessions occur
- There are many types of sessional roles: for example, youth workers for recreational activities (“Rec” area), sports coaches, climbing instructors, media or arts workers, and more, depending on your skills and interests
- The nature of the work is to run or support the delivery of activities — games, sports, arts, mentoring, outreach, etc. — for young people using the Youth Zone
Our staff benefits (salaried and sessional)
- Unitas pays at least the London Living Wage — so staff are earning a wage considered acceptable for living costs in London
- After a year of employment, staff qualify for enhanced sick pay
- After two years, there’s enhanced maternity pay available for those eligible
- In addition to standard annual leave, staff receive an extra paid “wellbeing day” each year
- Staff have free access to the on-site gym
- During sessions, staff can get a hot meal for just £1
- The organisation also runs regular staff socials — so there’s a social and community aspect to working at Unitas

TAILORED SUPPORT FROM INCREDIBLE AND TRUSTED YOUTH WORKERS
“Unitas gave me space to heal – and the push to grow. Yasmine especially… she’s more than a youth worker. She reminded me how brave I was, even when I didn’t feel it. She saw strength, capability, and potential in me when all I saw was fear and brokenness. She believed in me long before I believed in myself, she was one of the people who saved me. From the very first day I walked in, I knew I had found my commmunity”
