Unitas Teams Up with GSK to Create New STEM Opportunities for Young People
We’re thrilled to announce an exciting new partnership that will bring inspiring science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) opportunities to young people at Unitas Youth Zone.
As part of a wider collaboration between GSK and national youth charity OnSide, Unitas has been selected as one of two Youth Zones to help launch this exciting new programme, creating hands-on opportunities for young people in Barnet to explore STEM in engaging and accessible ways.
Bringing STEM to life
Through GSK’s support, we are developing a dedicated Maker Zone within Unitas – an engaging, accessible space where young people can explore STEM in a practical and creative way.
Alongside this, we are delivering a pilot programme of intensive STEM workshops during key periods in May and October. These sessions are being delivered in collaboration with The Franklin Institute, a leading science and technology learning organisation based in Philadelphia, USA. Experts from The Franklin Institute will work directly with our young people. Bringing STEM to life through interactive, hands-on experiences, while also training our staff to embed high-quality STEM provision for the long term.

This partnership is about more than activity. It’s about quality and consistency. By investing in staff training and dedicated spaces, we are strengthening our ability to deliver meaningful, future-focused programmes that build skills, confidence and curiosity. For our young people, this means:

- Increased confidence in trying something new
Breaking the holiday slump
For many young people, school holidays can mean long periods without structure, connection or stimulation. As highlighted in the recent Generation Isolation report, too much unstructured time can contribute to feelings of isolation, low motivation and disengagement.
Our enhanced Holiday Club provision, featuring STEM workshops as part of this partnership, offers a powerful alternative. It provides a space where young people can stay active, connect with others and take part in something that is not only fun, but genuinely meaningful. From experimenting and building to problem-solving and creating, young people are encouraged to explore new ideas, build confidence and see what’s possible for their future.
